History of Rochez Academy

Eilis Rochez McKenna established Rochez Academy in 1994.  She choreographed dances that she would teach to her students, and designed the school dresses and jumpers to reflect her love of Irish heritage.

She took inspiration for the embroidery from the Book of Kells, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John that were “illuminated” that is, beautifully illustrated by Irish monks about 800AD.

Rochez dancers have always enjoyed performing in front of audiences during March shows, summer festivals, and private celebrations, no matter how shy they may have been when they started dancing.

Dancers who choose to compete in Irish dance have traveled around our region and around the world.

Above all, Rochez dancers learn to treasure their Western New York community, the close relationships formed among dancers and their families, and Irish music and dance.
